Why is salt so cheap?

So many other commodities are so expensive to buy pre-packaged (like water), but I can buy enough salt to last me for over a year with less than a dollar. Do people in the salt business even make a profit? How come they've never gotten around to charge a premium price for it like water bottling companies? I know I wouldn't stop buying salt even if they raised the price by a dollar or two...
