Why does Imam Rauf think the area around the 9/11 site isn't hallowed ground?

I think the real question is why anyone takes this Rauf fellow seriously. I mean, you put Imam in front of your name, and instantly you become some sort of carrier of wisdom? This guy is a shill and a joke~!
