Is Atlanta, GA a good place to live?

Well I'm currently living in Boston,MA area for 3.5 years. Boston is nice but expensive when real estate and taxation are concerned. I have got an opportunity to get transferred to Atlanta, GA. Now Atlanta is much cheaper but I have been hearing that it's not one of the safest place and the schools(meaning public) are not that good there. I can afford to buy a bigger house in Atlanta compared to Boston. Would it be a good decision to move to Atlanta and settle there? Tell me from your experience.
